Back End Engineer

We are looking for experienced backend engineers with a passion for building large-scale systems that power the next generation of local-commerce.

As an engineer on the Breadcrumb by Groupon team, you will be working on a fast-paced startup-like team with fellow entrepreneurial developers who know how to ship. We are a continuous deployment shop, the code you land today will be in production tomorrow, and we have built an agile culture of testing and code-review to make that possible… even for highly-available, mission critical systems like payment processing.

You’ll be working on systems that move around millions of dollars, and power tens of thousands of local merchants. The next time you eat lunch at a restaurant, or shop at a local store, your swipe could be travelling over the pipes that you built.

Desired Experience and Qualities:

• BS or MS in Computer Science or equivalent experience
• Track record of building cool, at-scale web applications
• Experience in at least one compiled language (C, Java) and one dynamic scripting language (e.g. Ruby, Python, Perl)
• Strong familiarity with SQL database programming and performance
• Excellent proficiency with *NIX development environments
• Excellent understanding of how internet and Web technologies work

Front End Engineer

We’re looking for great front-end developers to hack on a variety of products aimed at making merchants’ lives easier and happier. We work in small, independent and agile teams, and collaborate with product designers to implement stuff quickly. We are looking for people that can have an immediate impact, so experienced front-end engineers are preferred, but anybody with experience working on user interfaces and a passion for detail are encouraged to apply.

There are not a lot of boundaries here, so expect to make a big impact. The code we check in today is running in production by tomorrow. So we need people that will take pride in the quality of their code and take it personally when there’s a bug that prevented one of our merchants from getting their job done.

The kind of stuff you’ll be doing:

• Implement new features for all apps we offer to Groupon merchants – interesting stuff ranging from reinventing payments processing and point of sale to finding insights from data that help merchants run their business more efficiently
• Collaborate with product designers to make sure all user interactions are well-designed and implemented correctly
• Fix bugs as they are found. Deploy new code without waiting
• Test features across all major browsers
• Identify and fix performance issues

The kind of experience we expect:

• 3 years or more of experience developing with HTML, CSS and JavaScript
• 3 years or more of developing with a server-side language (Ruby, Python, PHP, etc)
• Has worked at all levels of the technology stack
• Knows “The Good Parts” of JavaScript
• Can structure client-side code in a way that makes sense to people other than themselves
• Has a designer’s eye for typography, layout and colour
• Obsessed with the user experience and design with the user’s goals in mind, carefully considering all possible complications
• Has an opinion of what parts of HTML5 and CSS3 should really be used
• When your jQuery data grid plugin goes wonky, you think, “I’ll just fix the plugin and submit a patch.”
• Can code a 960 grid in their sleep
• Obsessive about quality
• Ruby on Rails experience a strong plus
• Open source experience a plus

Dev-Op Engineer

As a production operations engineer, you bring solid systems experience to a technical operations team that is building the future of local commerce.

You will be taking our high-availability Payments & Point-of-Sale business into its growth stage. Our systems need to be running smoothly 24/7/365, and we need a devops generalist with scaling experience to make that happen.

On day one, you will be building out our ops infrastructure, adding monitoring, deployment tooling, provisioning servers, etc. Over time you will build & manage a sizeable team, because ops is a critical function for our business.

Desired Experience and Qualities:

• Linux administration experience (ideally, 5+ years)
• 2+ years working with a large installation
• BS in Computer Science or equivalent
• Experience providing support in a 24×7 environment; willing to be on-call for production escalations
• Past work with system administration programming (such as with active monitoring), preferably with Ruby, Python, or Perl, without being strictly pinky-sworn to any one
• Great interpersonal and communication skills
• Eagerness to make the product better

Preferred, but Not Required:

• Experience with production web server administration, ideally in a Ruby On Rails environment
• Flexible and diverse skill sets, including MySQL, Linux tuning, security, networking gear, and various programming languages
• A desire to learn
